As the film commissioner for the Florida Keys, Chad Newman plays a pivotal role in bringing Hollywood to the picturesque island chain. His latest project? Assisting in the production of the highly anticipated Apple TV series "Bad Monkey," starring Vince Vaughn. Scheduled to premiere on August 14, this 10-episode comedy series is based on Carl Hiaasen’s book and promises a blend of humor and crime. "Bad Monkey" brought 150 cast and crew members to the Keys, a logistical feat in an area known for its limited and expensive lodging. Newman, who describes himself as a "free producer" for incoming productions, coordinated accommodations across 11 different hotels from Key West to Marathon. Despite advising the producers to avoid the busy spring break season, contractual obligations forced the team to film in March.

The series, set in Big Pine Key, features Vaughn’s character, Andrew Yancy, a former Miami detective turned restaurant inspector who gets embroiled in a bizarre murder case. The production team aimed to capture the unique essence of the Keys, even though high costs forced much of the filming to take place in Miami. For instance, a college in Miami was transformed into a stand-in for the local Sheriff's Department.

Newman emphasizes the broader impact of such productions on local tourism. He draws parallels to shows like "Breaking Bad," which, despie its dark themes, boosted tourism in Albuquerque. Similarly, "Bloodline," filmed in the Keys, spotlighted local settings while weaving a tale of corruption and crime.Upcoming AttractionsNewman also highlighted the recent success of the Key West Film Festival, which showcased the LGBT film "Clocked." Plans are underway to bring the film back for Pride, underscoring the Keys’ commitment to diverse and inclusive storytelling. As "Bad Monkey" gears up for its debut, Newman remains optimistic about the continued allure of the Keys as a filming destination. With its unique landscapes and vibrant culture, the Florida Keys provide an irreplaceable backdrop for Hollywood's storytelling.
