This Saturday, January 10, 2026, Key West will come alive with two meaningful events honoring service members, veterans, and first responders. Both the annual Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride and the inaugural Save Our First Responders 5K offer opportunities for locals and visitors to show support, participate in active tributes, and foster community spirit amid the island's scenic backdrop.
Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride
The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride is a powerful multi-day cycling initiative designed to empower injured veterans through physical activity, camaraderie, and shared military bonds. Participants, including wounded warriors, ride together to build confidence, strength, and resilience while raising awareness and funds for veteran programs. This year's Florida Keys edition spans Friday, January 9, through Saturday, January 10. The ride begins earlier in the Upper and Middle Keys (starting from Coral Shores High School on Friday), with the final leg concluding in Key West on Saturday.
Saturday Schedule (January 10):
- 10:30 a.m.: Departure from Naval Air Station Key West (NAS Key West) at Boca Chica, with a group of 50+ riders and support staff.
- Noon: Arrival at Bayview Park for a welcoming ceremony hosted by the Military Affairs Committee, including lunch and honors.
- 12:45 p.m. – approx. 2:00 p.m.: Guided community ride around historic military sites in Key West, such as the USS Maine Memorial at Key West Cemetery, military memorials at Bayview Park, and Mallory Square. The public is encouraged to join (patriotic bike decorations welcome; suggested $20 donation via woundedwarriorproject.org).
Motorists should plan for minor delays along the route, as U.S. 1 remains open but may involve rolling lane shifts—patience and caution are advised. The Key West Police Department assists with escorting the riders.
Save Our First Responders 5K
The Save Our First Responders 5K (sponsored by Shatterproof FHE Health) is a new event organized as a program of the Florida Correctional Officers Association, Inc. (FLCOA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about mental health challenges faced by first responders due to job-related trauma, stress, and exposure to traumatic events. The race promotes wellness, camaraderie, and support for law enforcement, corrections officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders (including U.S. Armed Forces members). It features multiple categories: 5K run/walk (civilians or first responders/military), walk-only options, virtual participation, a 1-mile Hero Challenge (untimed), and kids' events (5K run/walk or 1-mile Hero Challenge).
Event Details (Saturday, January 10):
- Location: Truman Waterfront Park, near the historic Coast Guard Cutter Ingham Museum.
- Start Time: 8:00 a.m. (packet pickup and race-day registration from 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.).
