Key West High School students presented a moving tribute to 9/11, showcasing their reflections on American values and patriotism through a series of six student-produced pieces. Eric Kosick, student director of Conch5 Studios, introduced the event by highlighting the significance of the American flag as a symbol of freedom, justice, and perseverance. The students were given the task of expressing their sentiments about the flag, and in light of the 9/11 tragedy, they felt compelled to use their voices to convey their respect for the nation and its enduring ideals.
The video presentations centered on the American flag’s role in representing the country’s core principles, such as freedom, equality, and democracy. One segment explored the flag’s history, from its creation in 1777 to its place as a symbol of strength carried by men of honor and defended by patriots. The students expressed their thoughts on what the flag means to them, emphasizing its representation of the freedoms they cherish, including education, freedom of religion, and the right to a fair trial.
The final pieces expanded beyond the flag to reflect on what it means to be an American. The students shared personal interpretations, linking the flag to the broader ideals of liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. The project concluded with a powerful reminder of the spirit of America: a country built on freedom and unity, standing strong through adversity, as symbolized by the American flag.
