The community of Key West is invited to gather in remembrance of former City Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover, a dedicated public servant and beloved advocate for the island's residents and causes. A celebration of life for Commissioner Hoover will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Key West Amphitheater.

Hoover, who represented District 5 on the Key West City Commission, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 72 following a courageous battle with health issues. First elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022, she chose not to seek a third term, leaving a lasting legacy of thoughtful leadership, integrity, and compassion. Long before her time on the commission, Hoover was a pillar of the Key West community.

After a 35-year career in public works and construction, she made the island her home in 2001. She founded Girls' Night Out, a vibrant networking group that raised funds for local charities, and was a passionate fundraiser for numerous nonprofits. Hoover served on the board of directors for the Key West Business Guild, as past president of Helpline of the Florida Keys, and was a strong supporter of suicide prevention efforts. A former Queen of Fantasy Fest, she embodied the spirit of Key West with her warmth, energy, and commitment to bringing people together.

City officials and colleagues remembered her fondly. "Commissioner Hoover's leadership, thoughtfulness, and deeply caring approach made a lasting and positive impact on our community," said City Manager Brian L. Barroso. Fellow commissioners described her as a fighter with unwavering dedication to her constituents, noting that her absence in recent months due to health challenges was deeply felt.

Hoover is survived by her loving husband, Charlie Waite, and her family. Her genuine compassion and devotion to Key West will continue to inspire those she served and touched. The public is welcome to attend the celebration of life to honor her remarkable contributions and share in the memories of a true champion for the Southernmost City.
